Summary

The southwestern Indian state of Kerala is facing the worst monsoon season since 1924, causing severe flooding and landslides. At least 364 people have been killed and more than 200,000 people have been displaced. ActionAid is responding immediately, including providing food, temporary shelter, reconstruction support, and health kits, for as many as 45,000 people. Will you help?

Challenge

Severe floods are devastating Kerala. At least 364 people have died, many of whom were crushed under debris caused by landslides. This flooding is unprecedented, and came as a shock to communities and weather experts alike.

Solution

ActionAid is responding in communities hit hardest by the floods – Pattanamthitta, Idukki, Wayanaad and Allapuzha. You can help provide urgent relief for as many as 45,000 people. These districts have a high number of indigenous tribes, Dalit and minority Muslim communities, as well as informal sector labor working in coffee and tea plantations. Like so many emergencies, the intersection of natural disaster and systemic injustice is clear.

Long-Term Impact

Access to basic rights – food, shelter, health – changes everything. With your support, we will continue to monitor the situation and evaluate needs for longer-term housing and livelihood reconstruction. ActionAid has been working with poor and marginalized people in India since 1972, reaching over 8 million people every year, and will continue to do so. 98% of ActionAid staff are from the country in which they work, leading to truly responsible and lasting change.

If the total amount raised for this campaign exceeds the funds needed for the response, ActionAid will transfer the remaining balance to the Emergency Action Fund. In the case of monthly recurring donations, your first donation will support emergency response in Kerala, and subsequent months will fund ActionAid’s work around the world, wherever the need is greatest.
